Course in hydrographic surveying offered by the CIDCO

The Interdisciplinary Center for the Development of Ocean Mapping (CIDCO) is offering a Hydrographic Survey Category B Course. The course has been designed to meet the international standards of competence at Category B, as described in the S-5 publication of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). The course is aimed at an audience of graduates with a technical diploma in land surveying. It comprises two parts: 1- e-learning, within a period of 8 months, and 2- an hydrographic survey project (5 weeks), on the Saint-Lawrence River at Rimouski, Québec, Canada. The e-learning session starts in October. Places are still available.

CAMUSS 2016 – The program is now online!

You are cordially invited to participate in the Second International Symposium on Cellular Automata Modeling for Urban and Spatial Systems (CAMUSS 2016) that will be held in a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site, Quebec City, Canada from September 21st to 23rd, 2016.

The Symposium will provide you with an excellent opportunity to meet and exchange with researchers and experts in urban dynamics and complex systems from around the world. During this three-day symposium, you will learn and update your knowledge of the state-of-the-art on cellular automata and other advanced geosimulation modelling techniques and their innovative applications ranging from urban dynamics and urban growth to traffic patterns, land use planning, public security and public health.

Come and meet our world class keynote speakers and international experts and exchange with them on their experience on developing and applying innovative geosimulation techniques to better model, predict and understand complex urban systems and their dynamics through space and time.

The Symposium is organized by the Convergence Network and the Centre for Research in Geomatics of Université Laval in Canada, in close collaboration with the Centre for Urban Policy Studies of the University of Manchester in UK.

MinEyes: Development and optimization of mobile LiDAR technologies for the precise 3D modeling and monitoring of mining tunnels convergence

A team of researchers, composed of Mir Abolfazl Mostafavi (director of the Convergence Network), Josée Dallaire (Director of the Centre de géomatique du Québec and member of the Convergence Network), Christian Larouche, Martin Grenon, Jacek Paraszczak and Kamran Esmaeili, just obtained a grant for the project “MinEyes: Development and optimization of mobile LiDAR technologies for the precise 3D modeling and monitoring of mining tunnels convergence”.

This 300 000$ grant is offered by the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies and the Ministère de l’Énergie et des Ressources naturelles du Québec, under the program “Programme de recherche en partenariat sur le développement durable du secteur minier – 3e concours”. The MinEyes project will allow for significantly improving the monitoring of mining tunnels convergence and will contribute to improve mine safety, to increase the productivity of mining companies and to promote a sustainable exploitation of mineral resources.

INRS develops a new flood risk analysis and management tool

Professors Karem Chokmani and Monique Bernier of INRS’s Eau Terre Environment Centre (and members of the Coonvergence Network) is developing GARI, a new flood risk analysis and management tool. The tool, a geographical information system (GIS) application, will consist of operational cartography and characterization modules for visualizing and analyzing flood risk in preparatory and operational mode.

Carried out in collaboration with Quebec and Canadian government partners, the project comes with nearly $1 million in funding over three years — $900,000 from the Canadian Safety and Security Program led by Defence Research and Development Canada’s Centre for Security Science, in partnership with Public Safety Canada. GARI will have significant implications for civil security by enabling more effective intervention before and during flooding.

Open Source Geospatial Research & Education 2016 – Call for short papers

The OGRS’16 organizing committee is pleased to announce the opening of the Call for short papers for inclusion in the program of the next edition of the Open Source Geospatial Research & Education Symposium (12-14 October 2016, Perugia, Italy).

The deadline for the submission of short papers (1000-1500 words) is June 15th, 2016.

Workshop on airborne LiDAR technology in forestry: operationalization and future orientations – May 4-5

A workshop on airborne LiDAR in forestry will be held at Université Laval, May 4th and 5th, 2016. The workshop is coorganized by Martin Béland (U. Laval) and Antoine Leboeuf (MFFP), and is funded by NSERC and the Forest Inventory Division of the Quebec Department of Forests, Wildlife and Parks (MFFP).

Montreal XYZ Challenge – April 1st

The Montreal XYZ Challenge is on an entire community of creators, developers and users interested in the ever improving techniques of acquisition, digitalization and exploitation of LiDAR (Light detection and ranging) data. Generating very dense point clouds of extreme precision, the LiDAR surveys lead to the creation of 3D urban environments. The challenge is all about using this enormous set of data to explore new application potentials or usages for digital arts, geomatics, engineering, artificial or immersive intelligence, urbanism and more… The ultimate goal of the challenge is to favor collaboration amongst various communities and explore new technological limits. Students and researchers can partipate and also act as mentors.
